| Hong Kong was under British administration as the result of the "Opium Wars" and terms with conditions were drawn up in 1841 at the Treaty of Nanking, where the last Emperor of China, Aisin Gioro Pu Yi, agreed that Great Britain should have a trading base. Great Britain would then later control Hong Kong from 1898 for 99 years, apart from a 4 year gap during the Second World War when Hong Kong was taken by the Japanese. The British have remained the governor of Hong Kong until the hand back in July 1997. Hong Kong is now known as the "Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China - Hong Kong" (Hong Kong SAR). Hong Kong is no stranger to tourism and there are many activities available around the clock, from daytime excursions to early morning karaoke bars, the choice is endless. If you enjoy browsing for a bargain, the popular Ladies' Market in Mongkok is an eye opener to all the different garments and accessories available at extremely modest prices. In regards to the nightlife, you will be amazed by the choice that Hong Kong has to offer! An expensive uptown drink can be enjoyed at the chic and classy Lan Kwai Fong, where many of the finest cocktail bars and clubs are gathered along a very busy and steep street or an entertaining visit to Macau for a visit to Hong Kong typhoon Ho Hung Sun's Hotel & Casino Lisboa is a 24 hour choice. In regards for a spectacular night view, the Clock Tower and the Wine & Oyster Bar in Sheraton Hotel in Tsim Sha Tsui are the best places to experience the night lights and evening skyline! Most cocktail and piano bars are open from 4pm - 2am, but there are other popular Hong Kong local bars that go on until 4am - 6am in certain districts (Tsim Sha Tsui - TST & Wanchai), be warned that the atmosphere will be very lively and certainly noisy in these bars, as the customers will be downing beers by the dozen whilst playing drinking games. For karaoke lovers, Hong Kong have on offer many karaoke boxes that have individual rooms for hire to cater for parties of 4 - 30 people with plasmas and sofas and separate on screen television song selectors by remote control. Karaoke is also widely available in large sized pubs in various districts. As for food, the choice is also endless with all types of international cuisine catered for! Seafood lovers will absolutely be spoiled for choice as there are many fresh live products from the sea everyday in many restaurants, especially in Sai Kung or the nearby Lamma Island. Because of the many fresh seafoods that are readily available in Hong Kong, a visit to a sushi and sashimi restaurant is a must to savour some of the fresh seafood that you would not experience in Europe, such as uni, which is sea urchin roe. For delicious food at an extremely reasonable price, the modest district of Kowloon City offers many different variations of Chinese and oriental restaurants. The cuisines that Kowloon City have on offer are Chiu Chow, Hak Ka, Hong Kong & Korean Hot Pot, Thai, Cantonese, Japanese, Szechwan and Korean. Travelling in Hong Kong for the tourist is extremely easy if you stick to the MTR, one of the best underground rail systems in the world. MTR is acclaimed for it's cleanliness, efficiency and ease of use for passengers, as all stations have a uniform appearance and layout. Taxis are also found wherever you go and can be different colours depending on which area you are in, taxis that take fares around Kowloon are red, Hong Kong Island taxis as red too, but with a white sign at the front windscreen indicating they are on a Kowloon - Hong Kong Island vice versa shift, so you need to be aware of this if you are wanting to take a taxi ride to go to another place within Kowloon, as the driver will tell you they are actually scheduled for going over to Hong Kong Island (Kowloon is on the same side of mainland China, whereas Hong Kong Island is as it suggests, on an island over the Kowloon harbour, although they are all part of Hong Kong). New Territory taxis are green and only operate in the New Territories in general, but can take fares from NT to Kowloon or vice versa, but cannot take fares from Kowloon to another Kowloon destination, as their permit does not allow this. Hong Kong on average have annual temperatures of 16 to between 29° C, with the summer months averaging to 30° C with ice cool air conditioning in nearly all trading establishments to keep you refreshed. The winter months average to 17° C, however there are not many places that have heating, so you may feel the cold.
